‘Diversity’ Isn’t Just A Feel-Good Word: How One CEO Is Changing The Corporate Conversation

By Ayurella Horn-Muller

‘Diversity’ is a word we frequently hear in corporate America, and according to Porter Braswell, CEO and cofounder of diversity recruiting platform Jopwell, it’s become little more than a “feel-good” term void of meaning. “One of the things that we see consistently is that people like to use the word ‘diverse,’ because it’s an easy word to throw out there,” Braswell said. “In this huge conversation of diversity, it now means nothing.” In his recently published book Let Them See You: The Guide for Leveraging Your Diversity At Work, Braswell addresses the overarching level of difficulty people within the workplace face when it comes down to defining diversity. Instead of talking about it, Braswell says businesses have a tendency to avoid such dialogue, and as a result, no real change is implemented.
